Colleen Demetriou

Colleen was born and raised Cyprus, a small yet vibrant island in the Mediterranean. In 2021, she moved to London to pursue an MSci in Chemistry at Imperial College London, where she tries to make the most of her time here. In her first summer (2022), Colleen completed a UROP with Professor Omar Matar, where she explored graphene production through liquid-phase exfoliation. Her second summer (2023) involved another UROP, this time with Professor Ramon Vilar Compte, where she synthesized new materials aimed at removing PFAS and PFOA contaminants from water. Most recently (2024) Colleen undertook a research placement at the Technical University of Munich with Dr. Verena Mittermeier-Kleßinger, focusing on isolating and analysing peptides in taste-active compounds. Now in her final year, Colleen is working on her Final Year Project with the Crimmin Group, investigating optimal conditions for the recycling of HFC-134a. Other than Chemistry, she enjoys knitting, baking, small concerts (especially jazz), and hiking when the weather is nice.
